Bad Fruit Elegy: Democracy Trumped

It was always going to end this way.

Even before the insane lawsuits that were filed daily, like an homage to the movie 50 First Dates, this was always the ending.

You always reap what you sow.

And in Donald Trump’s case everything he touches goes bankrupt.

The USFL was a thriving and competitive league that could have forged a real partnership with the NFL before Donald Trump became involved and ran into the ground.

The Atlantic City Casinos and Hotel Properties Trump attached his name to in the 80s and 90s also suffered a similar fate.

He was also a mascot for the now defunct multilevel marketing company ACN. A company which scammed people out of millions, while promising an amazing opportunity to sell an overpriced video phone that was obsolete the day it hit the market.

While there are certainly additional vile bullets that can be mentioned from Donald Trump’s resume I think you’re starting to sense the pattern here.

When I opened my eyes on November 9th, 2016 I woke up in a fog.

Normally it would have been a joyous day, November 9th is my birthday, but it was also the morning that Donald Trump became president-elect.

I remember going to work and resenting the smugness of some of my white co-workers who were almost giddy that Trump had won the presidency.

Not that the blind eye for Trump madness is any respecter of color, as evidenced by the caricatures of minority groups like Blacks for Trump, Latinos for Trump, etc.

I remember the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when bigots like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller were selected for White House Cabinet positions and Jeff Sessions was appointed attorney general.

Then there was the travel ban, the children separated from parents at the border, and the sentiment that Jim Crow was all the rage again.

Then of course there was the pandemic, which was handled about as badly as it could be: denial of the virus, contradiction of doctors, and a complete lack of responsibility for people’s health and their small business operations.

Borrowing a verse from the Bible, Matthew 7:16-17:

By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

But even with all those bad deeds laid out for all to see, the real rotten fruit was reaped as rioters (not protesters) stormed the Capitol bolstered by a false claim of victory that was as rank as Rudy Gulliani’s flatulence.

And just like that Donald Trump has obliterated democracy in four short years.

Let’s be fully transparent and point out that democracy never has fully existed for African Americans, especially when you consider our complete disenfranchisement until 1965, but I digress.

But now Donald Trump’s ruinous actions have spoiled democracy for everyone.

It’s only a matter of time before someone more sinister, but more charming dismantles the United States constitution and installs themselves as an authoritarian figure.

There are still some who would argue that our institutions held firm, and that’s ok if it makes you sleep better.

But just know the next time you wake up in a fog like I did on November 9th, 2016 there may not be a fixed date attached to its end.
